SWAN (South West Aquatic Network) is a Community Interest Company dedicated to promoting sustainable aquaculture and marine innovation in the South West of England. We are looking to expand our services to include shellfish health testing for local councils and stakeholders, alongside professional marine training to enhance skills and safety within the industry.
Role Overview
The Testing and Training Manager will be a key figure in SWAN’s mission, leading the testing of shellfish for pathogens and diseases while delivering accredited marine training programmes, such as powerboat handling, VHF radio operation, and sea survival courses. This role combines technical expertise with a passion for teaching and is critical to ensuring the health of local shellfish populations and equipping marine professionals with the qualifications they need.
Key Responsibilities
Pathogen and Disease Testing
Coordinate and conduct the testing of shellfish for pathogens and diseases on behalf of local councils and stakeholders.
Develop and maintain protocols for sample collection, laboratory analysis, and data reporting, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
Provide actionable insights to stakeholders based on test results to inform health management strategies.
Stay updated on emerging pathogens, disease trends, and regulatory requirements in shellfish aquaculture.
Marine Training
Deliver accredited training courses, including:
Powerboat handling (RYA or equivalent).
VHF radio operation.
Sea survival and safety.
First Aid Training
Develop bespoke training programmes tailored to the needs of local aquaculture practitioners and marine professionals.
Organise practical workshops, field-based sessions, and classroom training to ensure participants gain hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge.
Maintain training equipment and ensure all activities adhere to health and safety regulations.
General Responsibilities
Build and maintain relationships with local councils, regulators, and industry stakeholders.
Promote SWAN’s services, expanding the reach and impact of testing and training programmes.
Contribute to the development of low trophic aquaculture practices through collaboration and innovation.
Manage training schedules, participant enrolment, and certification processes.
Skills and Experience
Essential
Proven experience in shellfish health management, aquaculture, or marine biology.
Experience and capability as powerboat and/or workboat skipper
Knowledge of shellfish pathogens, diseases, and diagnostic methods.
Strong project management and organisational skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple activities effectively.
Desirable
Experience working with local councils or regulatory bodies in the aquaculture or marine sector.
Familiarity with South West England’s marine and aquaculture industries.
Teaching or workshop facilitation experience.
Knowledge of environmental regulations related to aquaculture and marine operations.
Qualifications to deliver marine training, such as RYA instructor certification for powerboating, or equivalent.
Experience delivering training courses in marine safety (e.g., VHF, sea survival).
